What is the microbiome?

Your gut is home to trillions of microorganisms - bacteria, fungi and other microbes that together make up your gut microbiota. This system is about far more than digestion: around 70% of immune cells are located in the gut, and up to 90% of the body's serotonin is produced there. The microbiome is also involved in appetite regulation and in communication with the brain through the so-called gut–brain axis, so its balance affects much more than it might first appear.

Why GOS specifically?

GOS, or galacto-oligosaccharides, is a water-soluble fibre that isn't digested in the stomach or small intestine - it reaches the colon intact. There, GOS acts selectively: it feeds beneficial bacteria in particular, especially bifidobacteria and *Lactobacillus* species, allowing them to multiply and strengthen their place in the microbiome. It's a targeted fibre, not a generic additive - it "feeds" exactly the microorganisms that benefit your health.

What do prebiotics actually do?

Probiotics are live bacteria, while prebiotics are their food. They are indigestible fibres that don't try to add "foreign" bacteria to the body, but instead nourish your own existing microbiota, helping it renew and strengthen naturally. Prebiotics also influence the production of short-chain fatty acids in the gut - a process closely linked to the health of the gut lining and metabolism.

What does the research show?

In recent years the gut microbiome has become one of the most studied areas in nutrition science and medicine - with thousands of clinical trials and scientific publications confirming its role in immunity, appetite regulation and overall well-being. Below are some of the key findings.

What is the microbiome - and why is there so much talk about it?

In recent years, the gut microbiome has been one of the most researched topics in medicine and nutrition. Scientists are increasingly analyzing how gut microorganisms interact with the human body.

Trillions of microorganisms – bacteria, fungi, and other microbes – live in the gut. This collection of living organisms is called the gut microbiota, while the entire system and environment as a whole is called the microbiome. It is an integral foundation for our health and digestive system.

Interesting fact: Approximately 70% of immune system cells are located in the gut. Therefore, the gut is considered one of the most important defense centers of the body.

The microbiota is involved in:

  • nutrient processing;
  • metabolic processes;
  • the interaction between immunity and the environment.

Its composition is significantly influenced by our dietary habits – especially the amount of fiber in our diet.

What is the role of fiber?

We cannot digest all nutrients ourselves. Some fiber reaches the large intestine intact, where it serves as a valuable food source for beneficial bacteria.

  • If there is little fiber in the diet, gut bacteria lack food.
  • If there is sufficient fiber, beneficial bacteria receive the necessary energy to multiply and maintain a healthy microbiome balance.

What are prebiotics and how do they differ from probiotics?

When talking about gut health, we often hear two similar words that are important to distinguish:

  • Probiotics are the live bacteria themselves (for example, those found in dietary supplement capsules or fermented products). Taking them is like trying to plant new plants from a different environment in your "inner garden."
  • Prebiotics are the food or valuable fertilizer for these bacteria. They are special, indigestible fibers that nourish your own beneficial bacteria.

Prebiotics do not attempt to introduce "foreign" bacteria into the body but rather empower your unique microbiome to regenerate and strengthen naturally.

How is this related to Preimmu® Biotic?

Preimmu® Biotic contains galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) – special, water-soluble fibers or prebiotics.

GOS action:

  • not digested in the stomach or small intestine;
  • reach the large intestine intact;
  • serve as a targeted food source specifically for beneficial bacteria, including Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species.

Preimmu® Biotic does not contain bacteria themselves (probiotics). It acts as a food source for your "inner garden" – providing valuable fibers that your unique microbiota can feed on and naturally multiply as part of a balanced diet.

FAQ

Preimmu® Biotic is a food supplement and a source of water-soluble dietary fibre (a prebiotic), supplied as a neutral-tasting powder in single-serving sachets. Its only ingredient is galacto-oligosaccharide (GOS) powder derived from milk lactose. Preimmu® Biotic is intended as an additional source of fibre in the diet and as a food substrate for the beneficial bacteria living in the human gut - Lactobacillus spp. and Bifidobacterium spp. It is made in EU.

GOS, or galacto-oligosaccharides, are water-soluble prebiotic fibres that are not digested in the stomach or small intestine - they reach the colon intact. There they act selectively, serving as food specifically for beneficial bacteria, particularly bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus species. The GOS in Preimmu® Biotic is produced from milk lactose and is a white powder with a neutral to mildly sweet taste.

Probiotics are live bacteria taken from an outside source, while prebiotics are food for the bacteria already living in your gut. Preimmu® Biotic is a prebiotic - it contains no live bacteria. Instead it supplies the fibre your own microbiota can feed on and multiply from naturally. A simple analogy: probiotics are new plants added to your "inner garden", while prebiotics are fertiliser for what is already growing there.

Preimmu® Biotic is taken orally 1 to 3 times per day by stirring the contents of a sachet into a drink or food. The powder is neutral in taste, so it can be added to water, coffee, tea, yoghurt, a smoothie or porridge. Adults and children from 12 years: 1 sachet 1–3 times daily. Children aged 6 to 12: 1 sachet once daily. The maximum recommended daily dose is 10.5 g, or three sachets.

Yes. The raw material used in Preimmu® Biotic is heat-stable, so a sachet can safely be stirred into hot coffee, tea or any other hot drink without degrading the prebiotic fibre. This is a meaningful difference from probiotic products, where live bacteria are damaged by high temperatures.

Three sachets of Preimmu® Biotic (10.5 g of powder) provide 7.35 g of fibre per day, which works out to roughly 2.45 g of fibre per sachet. For context, the recommended fibre intake for adults is around 25–30 g per day, and most people fall well short of that through diet alone. Preimmu® Biotic is designed to supplement your diet, not to be your only source of fibre.

Preimmu® Biotic is a white powder with a neutral to mildly sweet taste, no odour and no added ingredients. It dissolves readily in liquid and does not change the flavour of your drink or food, which makes it easy to build into a daily routine - for example, in your morning coffee.

The composition of the gut microbiota shifts gradually, so prebiotics are intended for regular, sustained use rather than a one-off dose. Most Preimmu customers take the product as a course of at least 1–3 months, and often longer. Individual experience varies depending on diet, lifestyle and the starting state of your microbiota.

Preimmu® Biotic is a dietary fibre, and as with any fibre increased quickly, some people notice more gas or a feeling of fullness at first while the microbiota adapts. To reduce this, start with 1 sachet per day and increase the dose gradually. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose of 3 sachets.

Preimmu® Biotic is not suitable for people with hypersensitivity or allergy to any of its ingredients, or for people with lactose intolerance, since the GOS is derived from milk lactose. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, take it only after consulting a doctor, dietitian or nutrition specialist.

The only ingredient in Preimmu® Biotic is galacto-oligosaccharide powder, which is manufactured from milk lactose. For that reason the product is labelled as containing milk and is not recommended for people with lactose intolerance or milk allergy. If you are unsure, check with your doctor or a nutrition specialist.

Yes. For children aged 6 to 12 the recommended dose is 1 sachet once daily. From the age of 12 the adult dose applies - 1 sachet 1–3 times daily. The product is not suitable for children with lactose intolerance or milk allergy. Keep out of sight and reach of children.

During pregnancy and breastfeeding, Preimmu® Biotic should be taken only after consulting a doctor, dietitian or nutrition specialist. This is a standard precaution that applies to food supplements generally.

Yes. Prebiotics and probiotics complement each other: probiotics are the live bacteria, and the prebiotic GOS in Preimmu® Biotic acts as a food source for them. If you take probiotics at the same time, avoid adding them to a hot drink - heat affects live bacteria, even though the GOS itself is unaffected.

Preimmu® Biotic contains GOS, a selective prebiotic that specifically feeds bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus species. Psyllium works mainly as a bulking fibre for regulating stool and feeds the microbiota far less. Inulin is prebiotic too, but produces noticeably more gas in some people. GOS is one of the most extensively studied prebiotics and occurs naturally in related oligosaccharide form in human breast milk.

Store Preimmu® Biotic at room temperature in its original, tightly closed packaging, in a dry place. Because the product contains no live bacteria, refrigeration is not required. Keep out of sight and reach of children.

No. Preimmu® Biotic is a food supplement, not a medicine. A food supplement does not replace a varied and balanced diet, and it is not intended to treat or prevent any disease. If you have a chronic condition or take medication, consult your doctor before use.

Preimmu® Biotic is manufactured in EU. Preimmu is a EU brand, and Biotic is one of the most popular prebiotic fibre products in EU, with more than 3700 customer reviews.

Preimmu® Biotic costs €29.99. A subscription is also available with savings of up to 20%, delivering the product on a regular schedule that you can change or cancel at any time. Within EU, parcel-locker delivery is free on orders above €100, with a delivery time of 2–4 working days.

Yes. Preimmu® Biotic is a dietary fibre intended for regular use as part of a balanced diet - much like the fibre you get from vegetables, legumes and whole grains. Stay within the recommended daily dose of up to 3 sachets and do not use the product as a replacement for a varied and balanced diet.
